The most beautiful fiddle is the Saw sam sai, the three stringed spike bowed lute that had been used in the Thai ensemble dating back to the Sukhothai period around 1350. This instrument is played in a Mahori ensemble only, and on occations is used for accompanying a King's ceremony in Thailand. This hand built instrument is played in the same way as the Saw - U and Saw - Duang but the bow is not attached to the lute. The face is a thin stretched cowhide perfectly finished into a polished coconut shell, finished in gold leaf. The neck is decorated with a fine detailed mother of pearl inlay and tipped with a bronze spike (please click enlarge picture to see all the detailing).
